Welcome to BTNEWS!

I’ve been asked to contribute a regular column here at BTNEWS on topics of general interest to the Bluetooth® community. My plan is to approach the topics using a slightly different and non-technical twist. To that end, let’s take a look at Goldilocks and the Three Bluetooths.

Many of us at one time or another have heard the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. I’m not going to repeat the entire story, but here are the highlights.

Goldilocks is travelling through the forest and comes upon the house of the Three Bears. Hungry and tired, she stops to see if they can share some food and a place to rest. The Three Bears are not home, but she can see food on the table and places to sleep through an open window. She enters the home of the Three Bears.

Finding three bowls of food on the kitchen table, she tries each one. One is too hot, one is too cold, and one is “just right.” She eats everything in that bowl.

Heading off to the bedroom, she finds three beds. One is too hard, one is too soft, and one is “just right”. Laying down on the latter, she quickly falls asleep.

While she is sleeping, the Three Bears return home and find the intruder. I won’t spoil the ending, but I will tell you that it is not a happy one.

What does this have to do with Bluetooth technology?

Over the course of the next year or so there will be two major enhancements to Bluetooth. The first is the addition of High Speed Bluetooth. This will be followed by Bluetooth low energy.

Bluetooth technology today supports transfer of files such as pictures, MP3s, and movies between a pair of devices. Additionally, live streaming of music and video is available via the Audio/Visual Profiles. The addition of High Speed Bluetooth will provide for faster file transfers and higher quality music and video streaming.

Bluetooth low energy will allow devices that absolutely must have long battery life to become “Bluetooth enabled.” Devices such as wristwatches, personal medical devices, thermostats, and other devices that run on “coin cell” batteries will benefit from the availability of Bluetooth low energy.

You might be saying to yourself,

“But, there are already technologies in place to meet these needs. Why do we need High Speed Bluetooth when we have Wi-FI? Why do we need Bluetooth low energy when there ZigBee and other low power technologies exist?

What Bluetooth technology does today is “just right.” Isn’t the addition of these other capabilities going to result in an unhappy ending?”

The answer to this is a resounding “NO!” Our friend Goldilocks will become close friends with the Three Bears, a relationship that will benefit them all.

To see why this will be the case, tune in next time for part 2 of “Goldilocks and the Three Bluetooths.”
